Forest Programme II (REDD+): Biodiversity Conservation and Integrated Watershed Development at the second project site in the buffer zone to Bukit Tigapuluh National Park, Jambi Province
Detailed description of project:
In addition to the implementation of Forest Programme II (FP II) at the first project site in and around the Kerinci-Seblat National Park, AHT is implementing the project activities at the second project site in the buffer zone of Bukit Tigapuluh National Park in Jambi Province, Indonesia. The entire Programme (at the first and second project site) supports Indonesia in conservation of biodiversity and rehabilitation of watersheds with the end of reducing pressure on the two National Parks, on forest resources and wildlife habitats for key species like Sumatra Elephant, Sumatra Tiger and Orangutan as well as improving livelihoods and land use, including social forestry models.
The Project’s core components at the second project site are:
Output 1: Biodiversity Conservation: The biodiversity is secured through restored key species habitats (for Sumatran elephant, Sumatran orang-utan and Sumatran tiger) and reduced human wildlife conflicts.
Output 2: Watershed management: The watershed management in the buffer zone to Bukit Tigapuluh National Park is improved through forest preservation, forest rehabilitation, improved agricultural land use and soil and water control infrastructure through participative approaches.
Output 3: Social Forestry: The forest management in the buffer zone to Bukit Tigapuluh National Park is improved through social forestry schemes with focus on community partnerships to reduce pressure on forest resources and key species in the buffer area of the Bukit Tigapuluh NP through participatory land use planning, community-based protection and rehabilitation of forest/forest land.
Type of services provided:
- Development of a corridor for two currently separated elephant populations and restauration of the habitat in the corridor;
- Establishment of measures to reduce human wildlife conflicts;
- Implementation of watershed/forest rehabilitation as well as measures for erosion control;
- Support on the establishment of social forestry schemes in the project area;
- Development of village land use plans (VLUP);
- Implementation of afforestation, forest regeneration, agroforestry system development, and sustainable forest management;
- Support and implementation of measures to improve livelihood in the target villages;
- Technical guidelines, training, and workshops;
- Project Management (financial, administrative, M&E, reporting).
