More Income and Employment in Rural Areas through Infrastructures and Financing – Component 1: Implementation of Economic Infrastructure, MalawiCreated by Karolin Herpers |
On 20 March 2021, the first of eight markets financed by KfW-funded Programme MIERA – Component 1, has been officially inaugurated by the Deputy Minister of Local Government. Lunzu Market is one of five fast-track markets, which had remained unfinished under a previous Programme and are now receiving a makeover through MIERA.
Present at the event were representatives of the Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development, Blantyre District Council, and the Project Executing Agency - National Local Government Finance Committee - as well as the KfW Country Director.
The consortium of AHT, CES Consulting Engineers Salzgitter and the Blantryre-based local company Green Arch Design is providing services spanning from initial design to tendering and work supervision under AHT’s lead.
The consortium follows a design approach that caters to beneficiaries’ needs by focussing on inclusive basic support infrastructures and services. These enhance the proper functioning of a marketplace. The plans showcase a vision for future market development, and each provides for an individualised and locally adapted market space. All markets are expected to be finalised by 2022.
