Water and Agriculture

The Water and Agriculture Department of AHT has amassed considerable experience in IWRM, building strong, highly qualified and regionally experienced teams that can apply knowledge from various disciplines as well as the insights from diverse stakeholders, to facilitate the development and implementation of efficient, equitable and sustainable solutions to water and development issues.

We currently provide support to IWRM processes through projects in several countries concentrating on three main areas to facilitate an intersectoral, participatory approach to water management: (i) supporting the development of an enabling environment for IWRM, (ii) clarifying the roles of institutions and facilitating institutional development as well as (iii) developing appropriate management tools and training for their use.

Today, irrigated agriculture  is regarded as a pivotal means in the fight against hunger and poverty. Key elements of new strategies and concepts for sustainable irrigation management are: (i) a stronger participation and involvement of water users in the planning and implementation process, (ii) rigorous emphasis on operational aspects already in the design phase, (iii) investment in modern water saving technologies (water use efficiency), (iv) optimisation of operations and maintenance of irrigation schemes and (v) the introduction of transparent water tariffs.

By virtue of its long-standing experience in the irrigation sector, AHT GROUP GmbH is actively involved in the planning, design, implementation and management of numerous irrigation and drainage systems worldwide.

Furthermore, AHT provides assistance to agricultural projects ranging from institutional support to training of farmers' organisations, encompassing soil and water protection, agricultural extension and marketing and applying a variety of agroecological approaches that consider both ecological and social aspects of agricultural production systems.

With a view to infrastructure development in urban, semi-urban and rural areas, our special focus is on drinking water supply and wastewater / sanitation management as well as solid waste management. We thereby not only provide engineering solutions and improve operation and maintenance of communal water-related infrastructure but also cover institutional strengthening and organizational development for public utilities.

Our main fields of activities are:
  • Integrated Water Resources Management
  • Irrigation and Drainage Infrastructure Development
  • Urban and Rural Water Supply
  • Wastewater Treatment and Sanitation
  • Solid Waste Management
  • Public Utilities Management
  • Rural Infrastructure Development
